Kelantan is renowned for their warmth and hospitality, Kelantanese display an old world charm that captivates visitors.
Often referred to as the “cradle of Malay culture”, Kelantan, is the birthplace of some of the most iconic traditional Malay art forms, such as Mak Yong, Dikir Barat, and Wayang Kulit.
Soul of Malaysia’s East Coast
In this cultural haven, other Malay art & craft are widely songket, batik, pottery, silverware, and carvings. The nuance of beauty and aesthetic is embedded into the daily life of the Kelantanese, usually inspired by nature around them.
Motives on glorious wau, vernacular architecture and fabrics are derived from the natural world. This is also the foundational principle of their food, frequently highlighting the natural flavours.

Inspired by the beauty of Kelantan’s rich heritage, a series of design elements, colour palette and organizational principles are defined to provide a basic framework for the Kota Bharu Airport new interior.
These serve as the baseline attributes to address specific spatial requirement that ensure certain mood / atmosphere is achieved. The mixture of elements will manifest as a rich and complex esthetic that balanced each element, as what Nasi Kerabu is. Truly reflecting Kelantan’s diversity.

By analyzing the native cultural products of Kelantan, we have identified qualities and principles that can be adopted into the interior design of the airport. This ensure the airport will be undeniably by-product of Kelantan cultural heritage.
By breaking down the underpinning aesthetic principles of Kelantan by certain parameters, provide a visual framework to apply on design elements of the interior.

Pearl Island of the Orient
The welcoming PEN architecture is invited with a warmth of Penang’s hospitality. The spirit of a hospitable island that has been an excellent host to many world travelers is extended with the welcome embrace of Penang’s Cosmogenesis.
The PEN’s interior reveals Penang’s rich tapestry, developed from hundreds of years of cross-culture interactions.
Penang’s Cosmogenesis
Penang’s unique characteristic did not come from a single source, but rather from a universe of traits that amalgamated into a multi-faceted destination.
Hence the new PEN interior will be formulated based on the essences of Penang. The contemporary interpretation of Penang’s built environment, visual diversity and festivity is narrated into a storytelling journey to introduce Penang to the travelers. The interior intends to leave a permanent mark on the travelers heart and soul longing for a return to the majestic island.
Four Cores
To unravel the history rich Penang, four cores have been identified to be integrated into spatial design of the new PEN interior.
To capture the tangible and intangible qualities of Penang, we must capture the essence of Penang’s Natural Wonder, Architecture, Culinary and Art & Culture.
Wonders of Penang
The island is nature’s godsend with interesting destinations such as Penang Hill, Botanic Gardens and the sandy beaches. The rare collection of pre-war shoplots in Penang have been accorded a listing as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.
The scent and taste of Penang is defined by the exceptional food range making it the top food destination in the world. Penang’s world famous street murals, religious celebrations and the Georgetown Festival colour the island with joy and festivity all year round.

To deliver the one of the kind experience, these four cores will address different spectrums of design aspects to ensure Penang’s soul and spirit is alive in all parts of PEN interior.
Complete User Experience Design (UXD) are adopted to streamline and correlate between physical design and ambient design of the airport interior.

An eclectic collection of motives and buildform will be broken down to its most fundamental lines and reincarnated into contemporary forms.

With 18 passenger airlines operating from the airport, it is well connected to the global air travel network. A beacon for air travel for northern region of Malaysia.
Penang International Airport is the third busiest airport in the country in terms of passenger traffic after Kuala Lumpur International Airport and Kota Kinabalu International Airport, and handles the second largest cargo tonnage of all Malaysian airports after Kuala Lumpur International Airport. As of 2017, the airport posted a record 7.23 million tourist arrivals.

Rail Between Two Nations
In the south, a new trans-national transportation service marks a new height of diplomatic relationship between Malaysia and Singapore.
The RTS Bukit Chagar Station are located on the flank of the main road leading to the Johor Bharu city center.
The Eye
Inside the station, a huge reflective Sphere is hanging above the platform floor. A commanding mass in the middle of the station, that reflects the view of the whole station, providing visual connection regardless of where you are.
The sphere symbolize our strength in unity and oneness as the image of the whole platform was wrapped and reflected on the curvature of the sphere.
An Experience by Itself
A remarkable piece as an architectural installation and public art in the middle of a transportation hub. A unique feature among other rail station across the world.
At the same time the sphere is an engineering marvel, serving as a dampener counteracting the lateral and upward wind forces.
